Ohio Marijuana License Fees Too High Compared to Program’s Cost

A new argument has transpired in Ohio regarding the licensing fees for medical marijuana businesses in comparison to the estimated costs of operation for the program.

With the fees in place, the state could generate more than $10.8 million, according to Counsel  & Heal. The program inception costs include the development of licensing processes, payment systems and product tracking systems. The state plans to issue 24 cultivator licenses, 40 product processing licenses and 60 dispensary licenses. Any fees paid for medical marijuana licensing are non-refundable.

Several advisers are speaking out because the fees are too high for those wanting to open businesses or obtain a medical marijuana patient card. Depending on the type of license a potential business is applying for, the cost is between $20,000 and $180,000. The smaller your grow operation, the lower your licensing fee will be. All businesses will be required to pay a $2,000 application fee.

Medical marijuana patients and potential business owners are hoping that the state will lower its fees before the inception of the program or shortly after its inception.
