Ohio Establishing Rules for Medical Marijuana Program

Ohio Marijuana Laws

It is taking the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy and Department of Commerce some time to establish rules and standards for the state’s newly adopted medical marijuana program. Medical marijuana will officially become legal on September 8, 2016, and the state must have rules in place by September 8, 2017. Patients will not be able to purchase medical marijuana until 2018.

Questions surrounding the method of distribution are holding up the completion of the rules. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Board has not yet adopted many rules, according to WKBN.

Representative John Boccieri said, “The rules have not been written on this. The Department of Commerce is trying to figure how they ethically and legally administer this through dispensaries.”

Some established rules include:

  • Dispensaries must be 500 feet from churches, schools and public libraries
  • Medical marijuana will only be approved in vapor, oil, edibles, or patches
